Been riding on the road for 13yrs now want to try the offroad. I have bought a 2002 yz426f. Has sump guard , bark busters and generator kit fitted. It is as you would imagine though a little too fast to cope with the slower more technical stuff. Are there any mods you could recommend that could make it more user friendly in the tight low speed stuff?
Many thanks

Chris

First thing to check is the gearing - what size are the front and rear sprockets? If it hasn't been done already, dropping a tooth on the front cog is probably the simplest and cheapest mod to tame it down.

Why not buy a bike you can handle. :?

Did you learn to ride on the road on an R1?

Like womble says check your sprocket sizes. 13 front 50 back will give you the ability to crawl every where. As you have a nice big piston thumping up and down it should work well on tarmac sections between lanes.
If you find the gearing to low put a 14 on the front and it will increase your speed.
It all comes down to what terrain you are riding.

Will dropping a tooth on the front not make it more lively? I would think you would want to gear it up to lower the revs into the less powerful part of the rev range.

Dropping a tooth on the bike will give more control. Instead of the bike running away and holding the clutch to slow it down. It will make it more responsive at the same time.
