Right then, I have just bought a brand new 2009 Kawasaki KLX 450R. Zero miles, never turned a wheel.

Its a 2009 and I got it for a silly price. He got it from Kawasaki UK and never did anything with it. It obviously has the frame and engine numbers.

What do I need to do to register it on the road?

Can of worms opened I imagine?

Suggest you contact your local DVLA office, they should be able to give you chapter and verse.
I think one of the problems is that you need insurance first before you can get a reg number, I also understand that if you can get a Certificate of Conformaty and confirmation of date of manufacture you can get an ordinary plate otherwise it's a "Q" plate, these should be available from Kawasaki UK who will have imported the bike. Depending on the age you are likely to need an MOT so ensure everything is road legal.
Dipping headlight
Indicators if you have passanger foot pegs
Not certain about a rear view mirror
Speedometer
Horn
Chain guard for front sprocket and for rear if you have passanger foot pegs
Road legal Tyres
A legal numberplate as any examination is likely to be by a DVLA test station, this includes manufactures name and BS marking
A rectangular rear reflector
A light for the number plate is I understand part of Construction and Use although not an MOT requirement
The brake light can be operated by just one lever if the bike is classified as off road for MOT purposes, but this may be different to get an initial registration Certificate.

This can sometimes be problematic......

The easiest route is to fill out and send off the original V50 (pretty sure thats the one but been a while...) supplied by Kawasaki UK to the selling dealer which proves type approval conformity and year of manufacture. If you don't have this you will have to MOT it and contact VOSA to get an SVA (single vehicle approval) test done. This is where the problems can start because they carry out tests such as emmissions and road guarding etc which don't get checked at MOT and seemingly don't count when imported.....

For instance, I did a UK model 04 R6 when I had the shop and it turns out the standard screen and fender needed a bead around them to hide the 'sharp' edge, and also it failed the CO emmissions.....

I registered my 2008 ktm this year and it went as follows:

Call KTM (kawasaki for you) and ask them to send you a 'confirmation of age' letter. KTM did not charge and it arrived next day. Some manufacturers may charge. NOTE, original receipt or import papers don't work with the DVLA it HAS to be a letter from kawasaki confirming the age of the bike.
Book an MOT. bike needs to be road legal as mentioned earlier. Brake lights that work, dipping headlight, road legal tyres etc. The MOT centre will use your frame number to register your MOT. (Number plate was not required)
Arrange insurance, must insurance companies (Adrian flux for me) will insure the bike on the frame number for a few weeks while you get it registered.

Now go to DVLA office (no appointments, just a counter service) armed with:
Confirmation of age letter bearing frame number
Insurance certificate bearing frame number
MOT bearing frame number
And anything other documents you have for the bike
£55 registration fee + first years tax
MAKE SURE YOU TELL THEM THE KLX IS AN ENDURO MODEL NOT A MOTOCROSS BIKE!! Enduro models are type approved and do not require SVA testing. My EXC is type approved an SX is not.

The following day you will get a letter authorising a shop to make a number plate for you and thats it. Couple of days later the proper V5 arrived. I think my tax disk arrived with the authorisation letter.

The whole thing took less than a week. hope this helps

I have a certificate coming from Kawasaki as we speak, so should be good to go pretty soon.

Im taking it insurance wont be an arm and a leg? Jesus dont know why Im even asking that to be honest as I pay insurance on my van, M3 and a Ducati 1198 lol! So what does one more matter.....

Why go through all this hassle and paperwork? Why not try trail riding on your 1198?

Gchinery, thanks for the info. This has allowed me to get myself prepped for getting mine on the road. Knowing all the pitfalls beforehand helps reduce the hits of googling and stress.

One downer for people doing this with Yamahas; they exicitly write on letters for MX bikes, not for road use. But nice to know KTM and KX don't mind

BIkesure insured an old XL125 I bought on just the frame/VIN number until I got the registration documents from the DVLA. I already had a multi-bike policy with them but I don't think that makes any difference. Just explain that you're waiting for the registration documents and most insurers will be happy to do it when you tell them what's going on. My local DVLA office were brilliant and very helpful.
