Why reinvent the wheel, Trailwise will have already more data in it, be more well known....sorry, can't really se the point in it.

The bywaymap is a less clunky format than trailwise. It's handy as a "route planner" resource - something you can seamlessly browse through rather than have to do repeated searches on.

Ideal if you want to plan longer point to point trailrides over multiple days for example.

Like Trailwise though it's only as good as the info put into it.

Also, the Trailwise data is not in the public domain and is not ever likely to be, unfortunately.
It would be great to solve this and make use of this data to update OSM.
If you can convince the powers that be that this is the way forward, I'd be happy to help make it happen.

Peter

Trailwise data isn't very far from the public domain though and you don't have to pay much to access it - free for TRF members!

Trailwise does have the usefull feature of being able to input user evidence and get more detailed info on a route - such as local authority road number.

As mentioned the bywaymap has the advantage of potentially being a better route planner. First off you would have to get a lot more routes on it - good luck with that because even OS hasn't managed it!!

Then you would have to add in another route designation(s) for BOAT with TRO - either allowing partial access ie 4x4 or seasoanl TRO or totally banning access.

Ohh, so you developed bywaymap.com then!

There's another thread about it here:

viewtopic.php?f=84&t=6246

I edited some routes on openstreetmap.com to show them as byways, and your website has now updated them. I added all the routes within the Yorkshire dales, some round east Notts and some more south of Bristol, and they've now appeared on your map.

I noticed one of the problems is that routes have to be designated as "byway_open_to_all_traffic" in OSM to be picked up by your site, whereas many routes on OSM have been recorded/tagged by users as "public_byway" or similar, and your site seems to colour these routes as orange. I've explained this in the post in the topic linked above.

If possible, changing your website code so that routes tagged as "public_byway" or simply "byway" in OSM get picked up and coloured green, would clarify a lot of the orange routes.

Oliver.

The problem with this sort of web site, is that anyone can update information and it may not be correct, for example:-

Someone has included Gorbeck Road in the Yorkshire Dales, even though it has a PERMANENT TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER.

This sort of thing is no use to anyone, and only causes confusion, hope you can correct this please.

It's best to contact your local TRF group for accurate information. There's also the fact that whilst some routes are legally open to trailbikes the TRF advocates limited use in some circumstances. For example, in my local area there are a few lanes we avoid when it's particularly wet and others that we'd avoid on busy days.

Emma

Thats virtually a list of all the most threatened lanes in the Peak District.

Having said that, most of them are still legal and most are currently open however some are not.

Getting in touch with Mintsauce as suggested would be the best option because he will (I assume) have the latest info.

However, I can tell you that Chapel Gate is currently closed to all motor vehicle traffic under an experimental TRO (see other threads on this forum for details).

Bradley Lane is currently closed to all motor vehicles under a temporary TRO for repair (but will presumably reopen as advertised in April).

The Copis no longer legal as it is a dual status bridleway (at least from "the Cop" up to Dirt Low Rake but i'm not sure about the short section up from the main road).

Shatton Lane is no longer legal as it's a restricted byway, although Brough Lane is legal. The point at which they change is clearly signed near the road to Abney (I know this because I was up there last week).

The others are probably OK but that's the problem, their status is constantly being called into question and the ongoing process of reclassification is slowly but surely clarifying the situation.

Hope that helps but please do join the TRF, contact Minstsauce and go along to your nearest TRF meeting (doesn't necessarily need to be in that order 8-) ) because this is the best way to both find out whats happening and also influence it for the better.

Cheers

Richard
