I'm a newbie too also lots of comments on my bike XR600R being too big - I went out last Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed the day (unfortunately came off twice flooded the engine and blew a tyre too) the comments on a big bike are probably very true but I like a challenge and have decided to stick with it (its also a kick start only so yes I will have one leg stronger than the other very soon) having done a day previously on a smaller bike I have something to compare - the big bike is definitely much harder work, but hey I need to get fit (and the XR will definitely help with that) and I reckon if I jump in at the deep end I will learn quicker - Go for it mate and enjoy
