I use a map case from the cycles dept of Halfords.

Clear PVC flexible sheet with zip and velcro to make it (nearly) waterproof.

Takes Std OS map folded into a quarter, and straps to your handlebars.

Not sure they still do them: at £1.99 it undercut the GPS and SatNav systems that they sell by quite a margin!

This is the type of thing I use.

I also mark up the map, fold it in half and then cover it with with fablon both sides.

Overlapping the edges by an inch or so to seal it.

It's still possible to mark the map with a permanent marker afterwards if needed.

This protects it when folding it in the rain.

I use these

Used in landscape orientation , make a small slit in top two corners and pass one of those short fabric gripping straps through each. Attach to the bar through a small cable tie with a bit of slack on either side of the bar outside of the brace. I put some duct tape on the corners before making the slit to give it more strength.
Cheap as chips and it works fine.
