Generally four stroke starting is with no throttle.
Take it to TDC,nice long hard swing and bingo.

If you flood it,turn off ignition.
Open throttle fully.
I/2 dozen kicks to clear it.
Then turn on ignition.
No throttle.
Good swing from TDC.

The technique i use with my wr400 is:

1. Push down the kickstart until you get compression.

2. Bring the kickstart to the top then (using de-comp lever for me) push the kickstart 1/4 stroke, just past TDC.

3. Then bring kickstart to the top and give it a mighty kick!

Hope it helps!

To put the piston in position to start try this:-
Put the bike in a gear (I use 2nd or 3rd)
Pull the bike back with the clutch fully home. This winds the crank backwards until the pistn is near TDC.
    Select neutral.
Ignition on and choke if required (flooded if necessary)
Swinging kick and you're off (if all is well) ;)
Otherwise find and buy a house/garage at the top of a hill. :P
