I have a n Ex MOD 110 Defender 1994 with the old 2.5 diesel and i need the engine number to register it for the road. Anyone know where i will find it. Cursory look under the bonnet and nothing obvious, don't recognise anything on the plate on the drivers seat. so i wondering that with what seems like 30 coats of paint it might have been painted over.

any idea's where i should start looking please

Hi Mike it will be stamped into the engine block. Try looking on the LHS of the engine by the exhaust manifold somewhere behind the top fan belt pulley.

There is also the possibility of a VIN-type plate somewhere on the timing cover.
