 Post subject: DRZ sump bolts

I'm tearing my hair out here.

The DRZ has two sump bolts, one for the frame reservoir at the front of the bike.

And a bigger one at the base of the bike for the dry sump.

The front, frame bolt is smaller, it takes a 12mm socket but I ordered a 12mm sump bolt and it's way too big.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? The front sump bolt is starting to round off so I want a new one but just wish I knew what size to order.

Can anyone help?

12mm is across the flats of the bolt head = spanner size not the diameter of the bolt, you need to measure the diameter of the threaded part and make sure it is the correct pitch to the thread to get the right size bolt.
8mm diameter bolt is 12mm spanner in JIS

Did you order a frame plug or a sump bolt from the main dealer you went to?

As said 12mm spanner is not a 12mm (or M12) bolt.

A bolt of any size can have a 12mm head on it.

Any bolt can have a number of different thread options (learnt this on my dr. Thought I'd get a nice magnetic aftermarket sump plug and didn't check it was the same thread as the old!! Fortunately the dr had a long sump plug so cleaning up the mess made of the first 2 threads was easy.)

And remember a Sump bolt to some will refer to the engines sump/drain bolt. You need to order a frame oil drain bolt/plug for a drz 400 model number/ frame number blah blah blah from a Suzuki main dealer. Also bit 5 genuine crush/sealing washers for the same plug/drain bolt. Whilst you're at it order the bolt/drain plug for the engine (that's the ally looking lump between the fuel tank and the ground.). And 5 crush/copper/sealing washers for that too. Order an extra oil filter and it's orings and you're sorted. Keep them safe and order new bolts every 4 change and don't really use the washers more than once. That should keep you going for a few months/years/10000 miles.

There are many different tools available as there are a wide range of sizes but I have found this little tool excellent for use on the majority of common motorcycle components.
