The X version is the road legal/registered enduro bike with basic electrics as standard. The R version is the motocross bike (not road legal or indeed suitable), no lights, clocks or horn. The L version is the commuter/occasional foray off road bike with indicators and mirrors and stuff.
Mick Exctance uses CRF250X's for his off road training school, albeit stripped of lighting and clocks as they are not required by him as there is no on road usage. They are a great little bike, very capable off road while retaining suitability for a novice.
