Hi guys,

After a bad start, I am back greenlaning on my newly purchased DRZ400 and enjoying it very mch. The bike is great and seems really easy to work on too.

My question for you is this - What gear would you recommend that I carry?

A friend suggested spanners which would allow me to remove either wheel. I have these. Also, I have been recommended to carry some kind of puncture repair kit, although what type I have no idea.

I have Amazon prime so could anyone recomend a kit on Amazon for me? I really don't know what to buy, so any recommendations would be fantastic at this point.

I have a small tool bag attached to the back of my DRZ, anything else could be carried in a small rucksack. I am planning on doing routes around 60-70 miles in Wiltshire/Gloucestershire area.

Any ideas?

Also I have heard people talking about something called "mousse"? What is this and should I invest in it?

I'm not new to motorcycling or maintainence so just interested to see what you guys carry with you when you're out on your trails.

Kind regards,

Terry

PS If you're not allowed to post direct links by all means feel free to PM me.

Terry, best idea is to try and get to one of the monthly meetings of your nearby groups, Gloucester meets tomorrow (Wednesday) plenty of people there to ask advice...if you do pop along I'll see you there..another DRZ owner :)

that is a decent list.

As a frequent leader there are 3 main things that you tend to have to deal with now and again.

1, Punctures, do you have a spare tube, tools to remove the wheel, and levers. You asked what are mousses, basically a rubber inflated innertube that does not go down. I ride with them and have for years. One puncture on the lanes was enough for me. It is often asked how long do they last? 18 months I had out of mine, and I ride almost every weekend. Perhaps 3000 miles a year. Key things are keep to under 50mph on the road, and try not to do long stretches of road riding. Get them lubed every tyre change. They work for me.

2. Drowned bike, dropped in water, or water too deep. new spark plug and knowing how you remove your spark plug, and the tools to do it.

3. Snapped chain, carry a spare split link, I prefer to have my chain riveted.

I carry far too much stuff, but it has often helped others out more than myself. Some folks come along with so little knowledge of their bike and no tools! Main thing is not to stop the fun for someone else, have a recovery card if nothing else.

Gaffa tape and cable ties get used more than anything else.

Most of that would be no problem, except the snapped chain. Wouldn't have a clue how to fix that. Would be calling for recovery.

Not sure if you'll be able to view this but one of the guys chain broke when we were out but we got him home, made a hammer by cable tying a rock to a tyre lever...

Ive packed my little DRZ bag with spanners, allen keys, some scissors, a puncture repair kit, spare spark plugs and spark plug wrench, pliers, duct tape and some other bits and bobs. My mate carries tyre levers so fingers crossed we should be ok. Cheers guys.
