hi
Planning to ride to Antwerp in April and was wondering whether Calais to Antwerp can be ridden on lanes (GSA friendly with Anakee Wilds) instead of the (very) boring stretch of motorway?

I have done this journey several times now, but just want to make it a bit more interesting.

thanks
Ben

Very flat. Can't imagine that it would be very exciting.

Hi Ben

I believe the coastline to the west of Calais and running along the D day landing beaches is good for light laning but I have not heard of laning along the East

If heading for Antwerp I would take the Ramsgate ferry to Oostend and consider riding the Pilgrim's way in Kent.

For the return take the excellent overnight ferry with a cabin (or board Casino / nightclub and someone elses cabin :-) ) from Hook of Holland to Harwich https://www.ferrysavers.co.uk/hook-of-holland.htm and then enjoy some great lanes heading back.

Meanwhile I tend to agree with Tom who I understand may have tackled the odd lane in the area. I have on recent occasion witnessed possibly the largest group of 4WD on UK lanes I have seen, all with Belgian number plates and being driven with little sympathy for the environment or other users. There must be a reason why. However I do also recall meeting a small group of very friendly Belgian trail riders near Waterloo. They explained it was their Sunday morning regular run and as in France there was no differentiation between in effect a Bridleway and a Byway. Basically they and my (French) Belgian friends informed me if you could take a mountain bike down it you could motorbike it and no-one would protest.

My main concern if you are heading to Antwerp would be the notable differences between the French speaking parts and the Flemish speaking parts of Belgium where I feel the French may be more permissive to Trail riding. This could be explained by the origins in Roman law of Rights of Road as we in England know it, and where I understand Roman rule stopped nearer the Rhine.

A fair few of the northern lanes in France are closed, and as said they are quite flat on that route, you would be much better routing via the back/farm roads for a change of scenery.
