This is my first drum braked by for years. I seem to be for ever adjusting the rear brake on the bike. I have had the drum skimmed and replaced with grooved brake shoes but they don't seem to be lasting any longer. I may be pressing the brake with out realising ? Just wondered if anyone had similar trouble.

Cheers Joe.

I think it's a feature Joe. I had to adjust mine after every outing and they were gone after 1000 miles. When I bought the bike I was advised by the previous owner that if it was a wet day, I should get the wheel off when I got home and wash out the drum as mud and grit would get in and wear it away. I started off with good intentions but lost interest after a while as, whatever I did, the pads just wore away.

Incidentally, I've got a WR250F now and have just changed the brake pads for the first time since it was new. It's got 8400 km on the clock and there was still some life on the pads.

Tim

OE shoes lasted better than pattern, with EBC being best pattern shoes. Gave up when the drum became worn and even new shoes used half the cam travel to start contact so did this 8-) Have a look at OXTRF newsletter August 2015 for details

Thanks for the reply. Disc pads must just last longer and obviously you never adjust them as the piston just sits closer as the pad wears out.

Bill I can't seem to download the August edition. I'll try on my laptop later. Thank you for the idea.

I found EBC brake shoes the best. That said fitting a disc is a huge improvement, mainly (I found), because the brake performance is consistent.
I can send you details of the way I did it but you would need some welding / machining facilities to complete. (The drum brake can be refitted if you wanted to switch back at any time, although I don't imagine you would)

Vern, if you could let me know how you did it please that would be great along with what caliper etc etc. I have an xr as well and a spare rear wheel, I'm sure I've heard of people using one of those.

One other thing have you removed the switch on clutch with the two spades on it ? Was wondering how do you know which spade is which ?

Cheers Joe.

Rear brake pads seem to die in winter...and it's not to do with brake use, as far as I can tell. It's more to do with mud between the rotor face and the pad.
