Hi,

I'm looking for some easy trails to start off with on an Adventure bike. Ideally wide and fairly compact surface etc. Slow and easy is fine, and see how it goes...
Owning an Adventure bike, I'd at least like to say I've been off road.
Are there any decent, suitable trails in the South East area, or many group rides organised that I could tag along on?

I'll be joining the TRF soon, just like to get some idea of what's about.

Cheers

Hi

Plenty of riding in and close to Beds

Herts TRF cover and look after rights of way in Beds

We organise regular Beginners rides from Dunstable downs and also Baldock

You can join our open non members Facebook group for details on dates but these are normally 1st Saturday of the month. I am planning to lead a Chilterns run on 4th June

Search Herts TRF on Facebook and join the open to non members group

Also you will also find the TRF Adventure Trail riding group on Facebook which will also be off interest.

Regards

Mario

Mario,

Thanks for the reply

I will certainly take a look at the Herts TRF page.

Would your beginner rides be suitable for a novice Adventure bike, as I'm not looking for anything too technical, or would I be better with the Adventure Trail riding group?

Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick

At this time of year you will be fine on any beginners rides. It's when the ground is wet and muddy you would struggle.

Mark Brown often does rides from Bedford.

It looks like I will be leading a beginners type of ride this Saturday from Baldock if you are interested.

Thanks,

What sort of time is the ride running from and too this Saturday?
I'm on a 1000cc on standard tyres if that makes any difference or is suitable?

Probably start off from Baldock Tesco at 0930.

Are your tyres 100% road use only ? Some lanes very grassy others have gravel or through woods.

Stock tyres - Bridgestone Battlewings, which I guess are more road based...

I'm guessing I won't be able to make this week, as I only have 2/3 hours in the morning before I have to be back. Is the ride also organised through the Herts TRF Facebook page, if so I'll keep an eye out for other rides coming up?

I'll also take a look at the Adventure Trail riding group as mentioned above, as I'd be keen to be with similar bikes

Keen to get your thoughts on the tyre suitability for a ride of this type though....

Cheers

as I posted in the bar;

Using OS explorer maps 225 and 227, these lanes should in theory all be easy on a big bike with road tyres, I've done it from memory though so proceed with caution!! ,google earth street view pics are quite old, the signs you see on the byways may differ from those shown in the photos. (Herts TRF recently got an erroneous no motorcycle sign removed on a lane off the B660 for example)

You may as well ride up the B660, or associated minor roads to get near these lanes,
in which case, might as well take a de-tour along Graze Hill, it's a highway, but quite narrow and twisty and rural

225 088 715 Cockway Lane - ride this lane from the west, it is graded for the first half mile, after that do a u-turn at the gate, or tip toe along, I dropped a GS650 Sertao there on road tyres though....
here is a video of me doing exactly that! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISU9Zjf_r18)

https://www.google.com/maps/@52.3316749 ... 312!8i6656

225 TL 083 688 Sandy Lane
Ride this south from the Tilbrook end, stop when it gets muddy and turn round, if you chose to continue, the lane meanders left, dodge the holes, then turns right down a slope with some ruts - be sure you want to go down there, as at the bottom just after it turns right there is a gate this is the Bedford Borough / Cambs border, at the moment the lane is closed beyond that point by Beds Borough Council, so you'll have to go back up the rutted slope.

227 TL 149 824 Bullock Lane
https://www.google.com/maps/@52.4076621 ... 312!8i6656

227 TL 067 867 Roberts Lane (make sure after a few hundred yards you turn sharp left, do not carry straight on, it is private)
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.46841 ... 312!8i6656

227 TL 059 874 to 074 908 long series of lanes, goes through a rifle range, if red flags are flying stop...
