I've been pulling my 1999 DR350SE apart tonight to change the chain and sprockets, wheel bearings and other general maintenance. On inspection and not suprisingly there was tons of clay and gunge behind the sprocket still sat there which I then carefully dug out and then I noticed a very small amount of oil coming from the seal area of the output shaft. however I can't see the oil seal, is there another cover that needs to be removed to get at the leaking seal or do you have to split the casing, I do hope not!

There is a metal seal retainer held on by two bolts. It is number 30 on this schematic.......

Is it a fairly easy job?

I have replaced one on a drz400 fairly recently, straight forward job if you have some mechanical experience. On the drz its a case of removing the retaining plate, remove the spacer/oring, then prise out the seal (taking care not to damage the sealing surface on the case). Replace seal and oring, inspect the spacer, i decided to replace mine (they come as part of kits).

I would imagine it would be something simular on your bike

Re-assemble with a nice lot of grease, then wipe off the external grease before refitting the sprocket.

Not sure about the 350 (never had any trouble with mine) but on the 400 there's a high-pressure oil feed to the output bearing and a bad leak can empty the engine oil in a very short time.

Greetings,

If I might add that you make sure that you thoroughly clean all around the outer casing before removing the old oil seal cover (30) and two bolts (31).

The new oil seal should be fitted so that it is flush with the casing and as Richard says apply grease to help it slide into position. I use plumbers silicon grease around the case housing and the outer of the seal to help it slide into place. Put normal LM type grease inside the inner lips of the seal before inserting the collar. Inspect the collar for wear, a slight polishing effect is ok but if you can feel a lip then replace the collar too. A new cover plate is not always necessary but do apply a small drop of thread sealer on to the thread of the two retaining bolts.

TTFN

Hugh.

If Frazers can't help then Ben in the stores at Fowlers of Bristol is good on Suzuki stuff.

One cause of seal/bearing failure in this location can be running the final drive chain too tight....when you adjust your chain bear in mind

1) the chain probably has a tight spot

2) mud can pack the chain out and make it over-tight

Mud packed around the back of the sprocket can also cause problems...as can blasting it away with too enthusiastically with a jet wash at close range.
