Hi all,

I'm currently in two minds whether to sell my ktm 200 and pickup something different. I also have the ktm 640 with a large tank, so it comes in at about 175kg wet.

The 200 isn't road legal yet, but should be in a few weeks. I've been taking the 640 out around the Peak District on the boats, and have managed all the lanes so far, albeit struggled and went very slow on a few.

I'm toying with getting rid of the 200 in favour of something that doesn't have low service intervals and premix.

Something light, about £1500 and fun!

I live in Manchester so have to ride 30 miles to get to any lanes. I do have a trailer, but don't really fancy the hassle of using it every time I want to go out.

So I've considered a ktm400, ttr250, and a drz400. I prefer the ktm right now as it's the lightest (and I like the bikes).

I know drzs need a lot of work out of the box to get it trail ready, is the ktm or drz similar?

Also is there anything else that you would suggest. I know of the xr400s too.

Cheers
Paul

You said you want a light bike......the drz is not exactly a light bike.

Greetings,

For light weight within your budget might I suggest the following 4T;

Yamaha TTR 250
Yamaha Serow
Beta Alp 2.0
Kawasaki KLX250
Honda CRF 250

If you are thinking of DZR then perhaps a Beta Alp 4.0 might fit the bill.

Might be worth your keeping the current stable, ride with the Group and see what else folk are using to compare

TTFN

Hugh.

Having tried a DRZ-S this year, i sold it as it was too heavy for a 400 and not as good as a XR400 on the trails - so sold it for another XR400R

Recently pick up a KTM400 RFS and that is a peach, for a 400

Still keeping the XR though

If you're considering the TTR 250, how about the WR250R. Not too bad straight out the box, although admittedly mine is mod-ed to hell

A hugely fun bike on the lanes and does a fine job of getting there too.

Hitting the MX track in the morning with mine. Would advise much needed suspension upgrading is needed for that sort of a pounding first thou :) .

I have just sold a DRZ400s. They are heavy and not particularly powerful on the trails, good on the tarmac though...

Keep the 200, they are bulletproof... Not high maintenance either.... And when it eventually does need anything, it's a cheap job.

2004/2005 ktm250exc 2stroke.

Brilliant almost indestructible.

First was a 2004 6 days I got second hand with 3 k on it.. Then did another 23,000 miles of enduros, 200+ trail rides and fun days...never had the head off, same clutch..but changed sprockets, chain, brake pads, spark plug and tyres..
Sold it seen on sight to a KTM dealer for more than it was advertised on eBay for :P

Missed it so much I got a 2005 exc version second hand for £1,200 with 5,000 miles on.
Now completed just over 11,500 of trail riding & fun days and 525 MXC used for trail riding.
Again never had the head off and only major expense was replacing rear plastics after a cliff fall... Starts first time, goes up stuff, comes down stuff well within my ability range and always brilliant fun... Now worth more than I paid for it as well!

Also interchangeable frame and cycle parts with my 05 525MXC.. Ideal combination for me..

If the wife lets me I'll upgrade the 525 to a 690Enduro (with sm spare wheels) but I'll keep the 250... It's just too reliable and fun to get rid of... ;)

I have a secret yearning for a 200 exc...
I say secret because I've always said I don't like 2 smokes
Why are they so cheap if they're this good ?
