The Clymer manual for the Suz DRZ 400 is excellent.

the bearing may well be a standard component. If you can get the old one out, your local bearing factor can probably provide you with a good quality (SKF or similar) replacement.

Stephen,

So far as I know the engine crankcases have to be split apart to gain access to the bearing, so before undertaking such an exercise may I just ask if you have actually felt or measured any excessive side ways movement of the bearing? If not then as a long shot have you measured the engine oil pressure because I am wondering if the oil pressure release valve might be stuck closed  What oil are you using and when did you last change the replaceable oil filter?

I use a company in Stockport as my bearing supplier but you need to provide him with the original bearing or at least the manufacturer's reference numbers and sizes; try Chris at Emmett Enterprises on 01614779020

Where do you live and could anybody call around to give a second opinion?

TTFN

Hugh.

Thank you for replying last service was only done 200 miles ago but i will check the oil pressure release valve.
I really cant feel any movement in the shaft and it turns freely.
Am doing this right i put the oil seal in flush with the bearing the put the sleeve in with the 2 notches facing the bearing then the retainer on.
Been told two different ways to do this one said put oil seal against bearing someone else said it should be flush with the outside of the casing.
I have just sent for a clymer manual so will wait for that to come now see what it says in that thank you again all.

Clymer manual says (p114) "Drive the seal until it is flush with the outside edge of the bore. Use a driver that fits the perimeter of the seal. Check that the oil hole in the bore is not blocked.

I suspect that you have obscured the high-pressure feed through the oil hole in the crankcase by pushing the seal in too far, and oil is being forced out of the seal as a result.

Hopefully the bearing is OK.

Good luck.

I have a genuine Suzuki DRZ400S workshop manual, do you want me to scan and email the relevant page(s) to you?

If so, send me a PM with your email address and I'll do it tomorrow

Dont really no i was told of the suzuki bike dealer near me to put the oil seal flat against the bearing.
When i went back to see him after second seal fail he said it may be the counter shaft bearing fail.
I put two seals in this way and both let the oil back.
The car mechanic round corner from me told me to put oil seal flat with the casing and not against the bearing.
First thing i did was put shaft collar on with new oring.
Then put new oil seal in flush with casing.
Good clean of threads and did the locktight on sprocket and nut.
Just see how it goes' going to give it a good run out tomorrow.

Hi , only just seen this post . The seal must NOT be driven in as far as the bearing ,but should sit flush with the casing, and it is then held in place by the retaining ring,it also maybe worth using loctite on the retaining ring screws as if they work loose it can allow the seal to leak. Better late than never ! !
