 Post subject: Bar risers

Guys just got some bar risers. On the instructions it tells me to use medium strength liquid thread-locker (locktite) to secure all screws bolts and nuts. My question is - is this necessary? Or are they secure enough without the thread-locker?

Thoughts?

You may find that without thread lock you can't do the nuts and bolts up tight enough to stop them coming undone without over-tightening them.

Dirt bikes vibrate and shake...it's best to use thread lock where you can.

If the instructions say to use threadlock, why on earth would you not use it? :roll:

Don't do them tight anyway?? Leave them loose so they move when you drop the bike and don't snap

The original bolts will be a certain grade that when tightened to the specified torque cause a controlled stretch and prevents the bolt slackening. New bolts and probably longer supplied with risers may be of different grade, so maybe they recommend thread lock. but watch which type you use, as it says medium strength, some when used into alloy can be so strong it can pull the threads when you come to undo them. Personally I have never used thread lock on handlebar mounts and have never had any come loose, you should notice a slight gap between the top and bottom half of the clamp when tightened so they are clamping the bar not just against each other.

I have 30mm risers and one inch up two inch forward stacked on top of them.!..Got the bolts from the local hardware store... No locktite and plenty of crashes... They are going nowhere... And if they start to ... You can tell, because the bars will move.. Mine never have....

Loc-tite is normally used where it is not possible to torgue up a bolt sufficient to hold it in place or where there is a potential safety issue if the bolts come loose.
Brake caliper bolts for example are supplied with a form of loc-tite already on the bolts.
I've put bar risers on 2 bikes without using loc-tite and not had a problem with either.
If you are sufficiently confident you will notice the bolts comming loose then personnally I would not bother, but with health and safety in mind the final decision is yours.
