I think it depends a bit where you ride.

I have a BMW 450 and its great here in East Anglia but we have a lot of wide sandy trails in heathland and forest fire roads.

My 450 is also nice to ride on the road.

However when I ride in Devon or the Peaks it can be a handful. In fact when I rode Chapelgate, 1st I did it on mine, then I did it on my mates 400EXC and I could not believe how mellow the 400 was compared to my 450.

The 450 over steep rocks really fights you back, its like trying to get a cat to go into its travel cage when you take it to the vets :lol:

I guess a 250 4T is good but they are horrible on the road having ridden a WR 250F but its a great bike on the trails. 250 4T can be a bit maintenance hungry as well........

Sorry Pete, I disagree. I am not as skilled a rider as you but i find my BMW does whatever i ask of it ( haven't tried putting it into a travel cage mind :lol: :lol: and before you bring it up i know it does not quite stop to order :oops: :oops: ) Provided i don't grab a big handful of revs it is very positive and i find easy to ride. I have mastered the stalling by not trying to pull away in too higher gear and i rarely use more than quarter throttle except on the road.

Maybe its the bike setup ( not that mines been set up) and i did notice the difference between us in Devon.

I would recommend the BMW450 as a good trail bike for a competent rider and i hope to aspire to that soon. 8-) 8-)

Hi Mike, would not dissagree, however my point was, although I rode my 450 up Chapplegate, it was much easier on the 400 EXC. Next time you are somewhere technical ask Tony if you can have a go on his 400, they are very easy to ride. And this gentleman I believe was looking for a beginners bike..........Cheers P

PS: my gearing was too low in Devon, kept ripping me arms off ;)
