Post subject:  Bike Advice Please

Hello, Im new to this and live just outside Mansfield, Notts.

Ive been looking into buying a KTM EXC400, and i've heard good things about KTM's, But if anyone can suggest a similiar bike or advise me on what engine size to go for, either the 400 or 450cc?

Are there any meet's around my way?

Thanks
Sean

Friend of mine has owned the ktm 400 since new,and it has been a cracking bike.
But,I must stress the reason for that is regular maintenance.

A KTM will be scary for a newby, so much power, would be better off with a 250 4 stroke (unless your doing alot of miles on tarmac) and giving it a go. After you get used to trail riding then upgrade to a bigger more powerful machine.

250F from 2008 onwards is a good bike.

400 exc from 05 onwards is a perfect trail bike.

250F is a little bit more maintenance than the old RFS motored 400's.

Just don't go for the KTM 450 or any other 450 if you are new to trail riding.
I started with a 400 DRZ, a little on the heavy side but if you can pick it up then it's OK.
KTM 400 should be OK or many people who ride in the peak use a WR250.
Go to a local group meeting and discuss it before you buy, you may avoid a mistake.

If you can find one...there were a number of KTM 250cc 4-strokes that were converted to 350 by (I think) fitting the 400 piston. A lovely sweet engine with seamless power.

The best bike KTM (n)ever made!

I wouldn't be put off by 450's. If you are a competent rider then you realise that the throttle works both ways and you don't have to twist it to the max.

On that basis I would also recomend a 530 EXC too.

Agreed - after many, many years off a bike I bought a Husaberg 450 and love it. Power delivery is different to a 2 stroke but I think I would have more chance of flipping a 250 2 stroke than a 450!!

The only thing would be that if you have a small 250 trail bike that is equally happy on the road (Yamaha DT??) then it will be much easier for getting used to the trails, rutts, etc. A pedigree enduro like a KTM, Husaberg, etc is a race bike and takes a bit more getting used to.
