When I took the DR for a quick once over at the local workshop (mainly to order the front disc) an old boy sucked his teeth and said the 650 lump drops straight in. Purely out of interest - I've no intention of doing it, at least for a good while ;) - is that true? I'm fairly sure the later 400 wont, and in any case why bother, but the 650 of similar vintage..............think there was a 600 too...........

Any DR riders on the forum?

I've got a DR650 as my 'spare', which was my first trail bike. I love riding it on the road, but it is a cumbersome lump when riding the lanes and it taught me the lesson that weight is something to avoid when trail riding and that power isn't anywhere as important on the lanes.

The DR350 is meant to be a lovely trail bike as it is and you'll probably only miss the extra power when you're on the roads between the lanes.

Don't forget, the Mondo Enduro guys went round the world on these.

Cheers for the linky, plenty there!

I've no intention of radically modding her, seems to be one of those bikes which in standardish form is very fit for purpose.

I'm sure with gentle fettling (clearances, jetting which I'll check anyway) she'll be fine on tarmac, if no super moto. The bottom line is that even with a spare set of wheels and rubber, she's a 20 year old 350 and besides very few bikes IMO are genuinely competent off road and equally good on it - although I could be wrong about that. That isn't why I got her. Mind you given the state of the roads round here (fresh post snow craters, river beds, slurry) I reckon she's perfect, B road fun to be had....... :D
