I was wondering if anyone has taken an exhaust, with a CAT, to a scrap dealer.

I’ve had to replace mine because of cracks where the welding has come away etc.

It’s generally in good condition other than that.

When I had the CAT stolen off my HiLux, I was told that the scrap value is about £300-£400, (the replacement was £1100).

So I was thinking that a bike CAT must be at least a tenth of that in weight and worth dropping in for 30 quid.

Anyway, I’d like to have an idea before taking it in if anyone else has tried it.

Not that a scrap metal dealer would try and pull the wool of course :)

Thanks in advance

Steve

Steve, They're Probably worth more in a bulk load than a single exhaust, but yes there is money in cats more to do with some of the metals inside
A recent news article in our local rag in Devon has seen scum bags jump a high fence and nick all the cats from the local delivery vans for waitrose supermarket, the cats were the only thing missing as the high value is reaching public knowledge, now its in the media i can only imagine the problem will escalate just like the railway network thieving

But yes its worth something Steve how much i dont know, perhaps you could be our man on the ground and find out if there is a good price to be had ;)

Funny you should post this as my mate was telling me in the pub only on Friday night that over Xmas someone has attempted to get the CAT off his Chevrolet Captiva. They only managed to get it half way off so he found out when it started really blowing on his way to the airport for his new year get away. They found the nuts off it on his driveway where they had tried to remove it. Not good.

Anyway, they certainly do have a scrap value. I think they contain Platinum?

Can't believe I gave one away with my R850R when I sold it. I would have replaced the Y pipe I'd had fitted with it if I could have got the bolts out. I was going to sell it separately. Perhaps the cat was worth more than the Y pipe....... didn't think of that.

Diesel cats are worth more than petrol cats due to platinum content.

You can get pattern cats brand new for petrol cars for about £40 from Cats2U...so I can't see that it's worth going to the trouble of stealing them. There would be more profit in drilling the average car or van's fuel tank.

Is there a market for buying them new and selling them to the gentlemen of the road who think they are worth a fortune as scrap?

I had a spell of buying my wife a cat everytime i bought a bike. More expensive the Bike the more expensive the cat. When i got my G450X i had to by 'er a Bengal Leopard "Snow" cost best part of a Grand, stretches out the best part of 4 foot and costs a fortune to feed.

It would be good when the forum gets back to proper subjects and we are all "Cut and Thrust" again far more stimulating. ;) ;) ;)

Cats..............can you believe it :?: :?: :?: It will be which are the best Supermarkets next.

Thanks for all the replies.

Well, it looks like the answer is no.

The scrap dealer I took mine to gave me 3 quid.

So unless the scrap dealer is nearer than the recycling centre it's not really worth the bother.

Still, I suppose it was worth finding out.
