Hello,I`ve been in the TRF for a few years now,but only just joined site.I am seriously thinking of getting rid of my WR250Z enduro and buying a Trials bike,it just seems to make sense with the way things are.My question is:-what would be a good first bike to get my bearings?
Clip.

My DRZ 400 may well be up for sale soon, if you're interested?

Do you mean a TRIALS bike or a TRAIL bike? :?:

A DRZ is a trail / enduro bike (depending on which model).

Trials is the stuff that Dougie Lampkin does on these sort of things:

Sorry to be pedantic but changing around the "i" and the "a" makes a huge difference ;)

Trials riders are generally friendly, so thebestbet is to go along to a club trial in your area and chat to a few of them. There's none of the 'must have the latest kit' attitude you get in other sports.

It's one of those sports where the abilities of the bike are a very poor second to the abilities of the rider. A good rider could win on a 20 year old bike if it was running properly.

As far as the different makes go, Gas Gas are generally cheap to run (spares etc).

The one expensive bit on all modern trials bikes seems to be the rear mudguard...and it's the easiest bit to break!

Passing on the advice I was given -

Get a post year 2000 250cc Beta, Scorpa or Montesa. You should be able to get a decent one for around £1000

If you would rather go down the twinshock route then there are trials specifically for them which are somewhat easier. A nice Yamaha TY175, Fantic or Ossa Mar from the seventies can still be found and will provide fantastic fun with a better chance of reliability then the offerings from Bultaco and Montesa.

The best advice is, as Richard says, to talk to your local trials club.

Best of luck, let us know how you get on.
