Post subject:  Route info
Being new to trail riding, I would like to know, where I can get all the maps and info i need
that show where one can ride and, maps that show clearly marked trail routes.
are they just standard os maps, or specialised maps.

Standard Ordnance Survey leisure maps are what you want.

There are two types commonly available in the local bookshop/W H Smiths etc.

The Landranger series have a pink cover and a scale of 1:50,000.

The Explorer series have an orange cover and a scale of 1:25,000.

Both should show the same rights of way info but the Landrangers smaller scale means each map will cover more ground. On the other hand the Explorers larger scale shows considerably more detail.

I prefer the Explorer because the additional detail can make the difference between finding and staying on a route as opposed to floundering around in circles trying to work out which track on the ground is actually the one shown on the map or which side of the wall/fence/stream you should be on etc.

Mind you, you have carry more of them if your out for a longish ride which can be a pain.

Don't forget that there are several good on line OS map sites that are worth a look. I like XMarks the spot. Here's an example,

Obviously you can't take that out with you on the bike but It can give you an idea of whats in an area before you buy a paper map at £7.99 or whatever only to find that there aren't any legal routes in the area etc.

There's a halfway solution between online and paper maps. I've just recently installed Anquet maps (free) on my PC and it only cost me £20 to download the Landranger maps for all of East Anglia.

I can use this to plan rides on my PC and then print out my marked-up maps for use on the bike, in a format that allows them to be wrapped around the bar-pad for quick reference. If that's not clear enough, then it's time to unpack the paper maps. Anquet can also upload and download routes and tracks from most popular Satnavs - so you can plan a route and then follow it on a GPS. And, one really neat feature, for me, is the ability to use the same maps on my PDA, for no extra cost. This means that I can go along to TRF meetings and discuss or mark up trails, without having to carry all the maps. And because the app also talks to the inbuilt GPS, I can immediately work out where I am, and where footpaths are meant to be - invaluable when walking the dog and faced with freshly ploughed fields or heavily overgrown areas.

I admit it, I'm a computer geek :geek:

Thanks Guys, I will check out the web site, and I think your right I would prefer the 1:200,000 scale, Ill check out the local shops tomoro, see whats around here.

correct I did meam 1:25,000 :lol:
