Hi. I have just joined TRF as I want to get into green laning (I have done it in the past locally a few times) on a CRF450r at first I thought this was too fast but soon I got used to the power and didn't have to use it. anyway after doing my research I have wittled it down to WR250f 2015 as this seems the year they made the big changes to it and reading the reviews loved the sound of it. or a KTM 450 exc 2014 or a WR450f 2014. I have had heart set on the WR250f until I read a few forums and KTMs seem popular. let me say I am a big guy, 18.5st in weight fairly fit, play rugby every couple weeks. would the 250cc still be powerful enough, I wont be doing massive amounts of road riding. I keep changing my mind. ive got a budget of 4500 and have a couple of each bike in my watch list on ebay, I'm keen to buy asap but want to buy to keep the bike a good few years, if any of you experienced guys think I would get a 250cc and soon want to get a 450cc then id rather go for 450cc now, but then I read 250cc is better for laning.

so many different views any advice will be appreciated. thanks matt

Don't worry about the power, it's nothing without control.

A 250 might be a bit small for your build. Maybe a 350 would be a good compromise.

Hello matt .you should seriously consider either KTM 350 excf or husqvarna fe 350 basically the same bike .I owned a KTM 350 until recently ,what a great bike it was and I could ride it all day ,I only changed it because I wanted a husky 2 stroke . I wouldn't hesitate in buying another 350 from either manufacturer.

Hi Matt,
I've owned the Yamaha in both 250cc and 450cc also had a ktm 450 that was a 2010 model though , my thoughts on going by your size the ktm 450 would be perfect, very easy to ride loads off low down power never struggled for grip you may want to consider in your budget a stiffer rear spring , just my opinion .

For greenlaning you don't need a big lump.

I had a WR250f and am not far off your size and personally thought it was a bit lively for greenlaning. What I did like about it was the lower levels of maintenance (compared to when I owned a KTM 400 EXC).

Maybe I am a bit old skool, but where's the challenge in using an enduro bike for simple greenlaning.

Why not look at a proper trail bike and dare to be different..!!
