I was defeated by physics at school, but I have to say that sounds like something, somewhere, in the ignition circuit is shorting direct to earth.

I am not sure if the picture has downloaded of the plug, I disconnected a plug I think is the regulator/ rectifier which had 4 wires - RED/WHITE/BLUE/GREEN (although different to wiring diagram) The component I disconnected from had several cooling fins.
I can now turn on the ignition and the fuse doesn't blow, it also started although is not charging.

Any ideas?

Bill, is that 2 red wires from the fuse, one going to ignition and other to regulator/rectifier?

So do the other 2 wires power the lights direct from the rectifier independently from the battery?

I have ordered a new rectifier/regulator so will report further when it arrives next week.

In the mean time clean all other connectors and wiring and check all the wires are sound and not broken.

I have put a meter on the red wire from the regulator and the red wire at the ignition switch, with ignition off, I get a continuity with fuse in or out. When I touch one probe to earth the meter tries to gives a reverse reading.

When I pull the fuse out and touch earth there is no reading.

So am I right in deducing that the fuse does not affect the continuity in the circuit?

But why do I get a negative reading when I touch earth?

Thanks for your help by the way :)
