I have found the Maxxis M7305 Maxxcross IT 110/100-18 64M rear works very well on my CRF230. Good grip in varied conditions and reasonable life. On a 2.15 X 18 rim the tyre is 120 - 122mm wide. (Your rim may be thinner) Depending on how old your chain is you may find you need a couple of extra links if you are using a 14 tooth front sprocket as it could get close to the swinging arm if the chain is new. The front Maxxis 80/100X21 works well also.

I had a similiar quandry recently when I wanted to replace my old Maxxis for a Mich Comp 3 on the rear of my XR400. The standard size (and size of the old tyre) was 110/100/18 and I have fitted a new Michelin in 140/80/18 size after taking advice from Alan at Enduro tyres.....there is very little if any discernable differernce in actual size between the two tyres, the new one went on fine and sits with ample room either side.
I understand that different manufacturers use slightly different methods to measure their products.
I know that the Mich Comp 3 is available in 120/90/18 and see no reason why this would not go straight on with no problems?

If you want a FIM approved enduro tyre, go for a 120/90-18. Maxxis do a FIM enduro in this size as do most manufacturers (Michelin/Metzeler etc).
On a CRF 230 a 120 FIM will be plenty big enough. They normally come in 120 or 140 widths - I'd whack a 140 on anything bigger than a 250cc bike, but for 125cc to 250cc, the 120 is grip a plenty! There is a 130 width on the market - the Yamaha WR250 come with these as stock now.

The Maxxis IT pro's (as recommended) are NOT FIM approved - they (like AC10's) are road legal motocross tyres (knobs are greater than 13mm depth). If you do want road legal Motocross tyres, the maxxxis IT pro are really good - but remember they are sized differently to FIM tyres....... basically 120 FIM = 110 IT Pro and a 140 FIM = 120 IT pro.

Hope this helps!

The info about road legal motocross versus FIM is something I was not aware of. It explains the difference in sizes that I have found in practice.

I used a Bridgestone gritty smallest size they do at the snowrun enduro last year. Worked well.
