Underrated but I'm biased having the 404e. Not the lightest but a good collection of cycle parts and engine from a drz e model (flat side carb not CV on most drz's). Some say poor build quality but mine been fine. Being 90% parts from other common model spares are no an issue. Frame, swinging arm and fuel tank are unique so if you look at one these are key points to check condition on.

I've got a 404 DS and love it. Suzuki engine, Brembo brakes and WP suspension. High spec for a good price.

I've got one...only real issue is the silly air filter box design...the guy who designed it thought he was working for Hayter lawn mowers and drew a grass collection box.

I put one of these at the bottom to weep out any water, plus being HD you can wear your pirate outfit on the trails if you want. :lol:

But, Richards right, my thumbs never far from the kill switch in deep water as a real drowning risks filling the motor with water :o

I've put a tubeless valve minus core into the left-hand corner of the airbox...take the cap off every time you stop on a wet ride to let the water out.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

In the end, rightly or wrongly, I purchased a DRZ from 2000.
The DR I went to see was very nice but considerably dearer than the DRZ which was 3 years younger.
Seems that DR prices are on the up now that they are becoming scarce.
The DRZ is a bit heavier, has the disadvantage of a radiator and no 6th gear but as a 1st bike it seems amazing value.
As a 1st timer on a budget this is a consideration.

I've got a DRZ 400 and love it. The electric start is brilliant, always starts up first press. Just make sure you turn the fuel tap to OFF when you put your bike in the garage or you will have fuel dripping from the float bowl like I did.
