Post subject:  Another beginner with the wrong bike

hi
I acquired a KLE500 last year. Not the world's favourite bike I know - but it was cheap.
I had an idea to do some off-tarmac riding on it (never done it before) but I became a bit daunted by the weight of the KLE, plus it would need more suitable tyres. I think its time for a bike change.

My location is Ipswich. I reckon its a 25mile journey before I even get to the lanes. This means that some dual-carriageway ability is essential unless I buy a trailer or a van. (unlikely)
Budget is around £2,500. Electric start would be good to have.

Comments invited please : an XR250 L ? or possibly an XR 125 ?

Thanks

Wide ratio 6 speed gearbox would help for road work getting to the lanes crf230f?

What blueray said. Best 2 trail bikes ever made, getting rare though so probably keep an eye out for a decent DRZ400.

Thanks guys. I certainly like what I hear about the DR 350. Very few around though.

I'm off to see one this weekend. The same dealership also has an XR250-L in the showroom for the same price.

Any comments on the relative merits of these two bikes?
The DR is a little heavier but I think has the edge given that I'll be on the dual carriageway quite a bit.

The Dr will be a bit more rugged of road

The DR would be the best out of those two for what you want.

Greetings,

Slight alternative to the DR stable might be a Beta Alp 4.0 because it uses the Suzuki 350 engine.

I have been using a Beta for the past year and find it to be a really good compromise for trail and tarmac, I also use trials tyres

My other trail bike is a Serow 225 but that is not so great for tarmac distances :?

Hugh.

Thanks for your input everyone. Appreciated.

Any thoughts on the CCM 404 DS ?
