53 years old and looking at getting into green laning. Live around the Rutland/Leicestershire area. Used to ride road bikes 25 years ago. My son used to race school boy motorcross, so I know a bit about bikes. I'm looking at Yamaha wr250f and and a KTM Exc 250f. Does anyone have any experience with these. Also wondering about maintenance/reliabity. Any advice welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome from East Sussex

I just have a road commuter CRF250L rather than an endro bike. Had a WR400F that was high maintenance in comparison

The wr250f is a more trail biased bike compared to its sister wr250r I think. Know a few who have them and perfectly capable bikes. The ktm will be an enduro biased bike so will be higher maintenance

I've owned both bikes wr250f and ktm exc-f 250 .

Personal opinion the ktm wins hands down for fun factor and maintenance for green laning, ( wife rides ktm exc-f 250 as well )

Just to show that personal opinions are just that - personal - I'm going to go exactly the opposite.

I owned 2 WR250Fs over a 6-year period. At the same time my son and most of my mates were riding the ginger bikes (KTMs).
My opinion is that the Yam was absolutely bullet-proof and low maintenance, the KTMs seemed to break a lot more and be a bit temperamental.

Cant eat Yamaha build quality.. but as always if your buying second hand the bike is only going to be as good as to how it was treated and maintained.

Are you planning to buy new or used?

I'll buying second hand. Going to look at the KTM and Yamaha Today. Does anyone know of any clubs/trails around the Rutland area as I've not really any clue of where to ride.

Thanks.

As you're on here, I guess your local TRF would be a good start!

I also have owned both bikes.
Yamaha WR250F - owned 2 for 4 years - only ever need basic maintenance. Excellent Trail riding bike.
KTM EXC 250F - modern 2013 onwards - older ones can be troublesome - more powerful, better for the more experienced rider. Without a shadow of doubt this bike needs more maintenance. Lots of poor quality issues compared to the Yamaha - for example, side stand, rear lights, valves, piston made of tin, headlight rubbish, bearing seals poor design to name just a few.

Thats my honest opinion.

Anyway buy a Beta XTrainer - more fun than the above.
