I had a very similar problem with a CRF230 Honda. The only cure was new piston and rings. Be very carefull to inspect bore / piston with proper gauges (CRF 230 is iron liner I would have thought your XL600 is too). I have found the honing of the bore critical on the Honda, don't be tempted to use a home use flexy hone or similar on it to clean up / restore cross hatching, as in my experience this will spoil the bore and very soon it will drink oil again. Clean the bore with a scothbrite pad, wipe the bore with a white oiled cloth until the cloth remains white (then all residue of contaminants should have been removed). Refit parts. I'd check valves etc at the same time - good practise.
I rebuilt a second Honda CRF230 top end as above and it's fine.

Thanks, some helpful advice, new set of feeler gauges are on the way! Hopefully I should have a good grasp of the cause by early next week .

Compression down to 70Psi, should be 185Psi.

Cant believe i cant feel a significant drop in power.

Next step is a tear town, valves etc look ok. suspecting piston + rings (hopefully just the later)

More to come...

Split a piston ring all else ok!

But cant for the life of me source a ring kit..... 97mm bore its a standard piston in there.... everything else is ok

I wanted to just get standard rings on the old piston to save a bit of money really

Have a look at Fowlers of Bristol website. It looks like rings for your bike are available on back order. I've used them a number of times and back ordering is often very quick.
