Hi fellas I've been green leaning Enduro ECT for years now local where I live ish

I'm new to the TRF ,

Do I really need a GPS? do they tell you your position like a satnav would?
Also can you plan a route and the GPS will show it on the move kind of thing :?

im just unsure on getting one that's all but they do look like a great gadget to have :D

Sorry if it's daft but never having one and a lot of members have got them maybe I need one

Have you looked at the viewranger website

Alternatively many groups do GPS training

Herts Trf are arranging one shortly and details will shortly go on the forum

Maps and TRF rides are good for starters

Learn the lanes and you'll be made up

Greetings, just like any tool it is only as good as the person who is using it.

I prefer to use paper maps and orienteering skills to plan a route but I am looking at using gpx files to share routes. Old skills and maps give a fuller picture of an area for background information.

Perhaps more Groups will offer map reading and GPS training in the future.

TTFN

Hugh.

People (including me) managed to go trail riding for many years without using a GPS...I still don't use one.

Just need a map and common sense most of the time...it's a mistake to get too reliant on any one form of technology anyway...when your GPS gets smashed, you will need to work out where you are by other means.

i use a Garmin Montana but only because it allows me to have a rolling OS Map in front of me, I don't make routes in advance, even though I do record my rides for future reference (I just never seem to ride exactly the same route twice)!

But for initial planning I always us paper maps as it allows you to view the "bigger picture" and i'll always have a paper map with me in case of technology failure!
