Post subject:  Rear suspension problem

Hi, just noticed that the rear suspension travels down and then stops, it becomes really firm, I have tried adjusting the compression damping but it has no effect.

Could it be air in the system and if so how do you bleed it?? or something else.

Thanks

Unlikely to be air... Need more info really, like how far into the travel, and has it 'changed' recently...?

do you have rebound damping on the shock?

it may be set to hard and locking the shock up.

Set comp and rebound damping to soft and back off the pre load and see how it feels.

It travels down about 4" normally then stops and will not go a my further, even with somebody pushing me on it, it won't go any further, doing the same on my crf and and it will still move. Same if you bounce up and down on it, it's like it hits a stop, it rebounds ok, so it's like limited travel.

Haven't noticed it before, it hasn't been used for a while and just noticed it.

I backed off the compression and didn't notice any difference. I can try the rebound as well but don't think its there.

Make sure the chain is still slack at full compression. If it's too tight, rusty or kinked it can stop it dead.

As above, check the chain. If it's ok remove the shock and check to see if the swing arm moves full travel without sticking. If it doesn't, the bearings are siezed, if it does the shock is broken.

I stripped the linkage and greased it all, put it back and it was still the same, the swing arm moved ok.

Went to a garage and he said it wasn't damping properly even with the comp and rebound wound in. He couldn't repair it so I looked on line and second hand unit about £100 from states, couldn't find one locally.

Managed to find a garage in Ledbury (Dual Sport bikes)who are rebuilding it for £60 which I thought was good. So I took the unit out and drove over and they are working on it. :D

Good price that.

Your other option could have been Dave Watson/Race Spec at Dymock or Brian Blandford at Leddington.
For future reference.
