Have just had my chain off to clean it , is it best to put it back on the same way round?

Yes...and make sure the closed end of the split link clip (if fitted) faces the direction of travel.

I dont suppose it matters. If there was enough wear to warrant it being fitted one way or the other then it would want changing anyway
