Been thinking of getting one for ages for doing carbs e.t.c
Loads of unbranded ones on ebay.
Looking for 2 litre plus capacity and heated.
Sub £50 if possible.
Anyone suggest one, or any links please ?

Greetings Gray,

I am sorry to say that these can be quite expensive pieces of kit if you want one large enough to take four inter-connected carburettors. The one we used at Stockport College was supplied by Probike, it really did clean carbs and coupled with their ASNU injector cleaning and testing unit we got superb results, but they cost a lot more than £50  There might be a motorcycle dealer in your area with the same kit, they might clean them for a modest charge.

I have a little unit from Aldi (Lakeland sell a similar item), coupled with a cleaning fluid from Maplin, and it does a good job. The problem is its small size so only one carb at a time, the time setting is small so you have to repeat and repeat and repeat the process but it is worth it. The amount of 'dirt' that comes out of the jets and drillings settling in the bottom of the tank is amazing, just looks like fine sand.

I also use a brake and clutch spray cleaner (sold by Jaguar dealers), catch the spray in a small container and leave the parts to soak. This aerosol works well with electrical switches too.

There are kits sold on eBay with 12 very thin wires or mini drills but use with extreme care and sensitivity.

Ultrasonic cleaners are amazing with fuel system items because they do not scratch the drillings.

Hugh.

Hiya Hugh and thanks for all the info.
I know people use all sorts of liquids in them including "fairy" and windscreen wash apparently.
Their are plenty out there in that price range it's just knowing which one too choose.

The unbranded ones have a bit a poor reliability record. Good second hand from a known brand like Kerry or Branson would be ideal but even used the still fetch strong money.

Hmm I had heard that the wiring on the unbranded ones were a bit poor.

Greetings Gray,

Just thought that you (and others) might like to see the difference that just 9 minutes in a basic Aldi sonic cleaner can have on a carburettor.

If that's what it does to the exterior imagine how much cleaner the jets and drillings will be. The cleaning fluid however is full of sediment which can be filtered if you want to reuse the fluid

I keep the 'filtered' for the initial cleaning and use fresh for final cleaning.

Hiya Hugh,
Yes they certainly work well.
I have cleaned a few bits now,and just in the process of doing the DR 800 carbs now.You can watch the dirt just bubble away.
I am trying the special cleaner liquid first, but will also see how soda crystals work as well.

FUEL VACUUM PUMP BEFORE,AND THIS STUFF WOULD NOT RUB OFF.

AND AFTER

That was after 3 minutes in the cleaner,so will put it back in until all is cleaner.
Then polish them up,as this process will not remove rust just all the oil and crud.
