Is there current guidance as to maximum group size for TRF organised rides? If so, what is the magic number please?

I think this can depend upon where you are riding I've heard of numbers between 4 and 50 being acceptable.

Not exactly TRF guidance but Salisbury Plain prefer 4 is the preferred size.
The powers that be did not like the use of a preferred maximum of 6 in the code of conduct so changed it.
Most groups use 6 to 8 as the max from what I've seen.
Personally I think 5 to 7 works best.

Suggest you read the Code of Conduct and interpret it then do whatever answer you get.

Thank you for the response.

I ask because I read a somewhat boastful post on Facebook that a certain TRF Group regularly runs group sizes of 12 or more.

IMO group sizes greater than 8-10 are likely to cause adverse comment from other road users.

This is a topic of conversation at Central Bristol at the moment , is there a legal limit on number of riders in a rideout ..?

The current guidance is in this document:

At the October 2015 AGM the membership voted unanimously to endorse the Salisbury Plain Training Area guidance until the next AGM, where the endorsement is to be reviewed in conjunction with the outcome of the TRF Code of Conduct review.

The effect of this is that the SPTA guidance is effectively TRF guidance for the SPTA area only.

The SPTA recommended maximum group size is 6 motorcycles.

In Hertfordshire our lanes are well signposted. We often ride with groups larger than 6, with so many members (330) wanting a ride. We are aware of the guidelines. We feel it is important to ride responsibly, stoping and turning our engines off for horses, slowing down to walking pace for other users, slowing down outside houses etc. We generally don't get abuse form other users, often we get smiles. It works for us.

We have grown quite quickly in the last 2 years and have had some occasions where over 25 have turned up for a beginners ride, which is no fun for the leader and TEC. We have learned from this and one of the improvements being we now put on more rides. This keeps numbers down and everybody happy. Wherever possible we keep the numbers as low as possible for everybody's enjoyment.

Thanks Peter , you answered that well.

We have asked for more leaders to come forward as it was the same ones time after time. Which is probably no different else where. Most weekends we offer 1 or 2 rides. What has been suggested was to have more intermediate rides.

Yes we have had to re think how we do things
