There is a UCR I know of which starts off a road then turns very muddy halfway down. Basically there is a gate at the other end with a small width restriction to the side. The road then picks up again into a normal country lane. The sign below is present at the start of the road. What does this sign actually mean? Access? access to where?

To be absolutely sure you would need to inspect the order that imposed the TRO.

I've encountered exceptions in orders for members of shooting/fishing clubs and suchlike.

Generally speaking, "except for access" allows those with a need to access property adjacent the road to use the route.

Thanks for the reply, Its a very ambiguous sign in my humble opinion. You might want to use the route for access to the road the other side. That's still access surely? I thought TRO signs didn't say except for access?

As with all signs they should be considered with reference to the highway code.

In this case it's
"Except for access to
premises or land adjacent
to the road, where there is
no other route. Other
exemptions may be shown"

There is one near us and it needs a lot of enforcement as some people think they're accessing the rest of the world by using :-)

I think most of those signs I have seen do say except for access on them. If access was not needed they might as well make it a field.
