The question is:

"Best "big bike" to accompany KTM 200 EXC?"

Lots of food for thought there! I'll rule the drz off then, and stick at the lighter bikes.

I can also appreciate the idea of keeping the 200.. I've spent a lot of time on it, and I know the externals of the bike inside out now. I've changed a lot of parts, and know that everything is sound.. Putting in heavy duty tubes, changing reeds, fixing the loom... etc. I couldn;t say the same about another bike if I sold it.

I did just go to look at a ktm 525. I wouldn't have considered it, if it wasn't £800. It was cheap supposdely because the clutch was making a rattle (which it was). That seems a common issue and shouldnt be hard to fix.

If it wasn't for the fact that the bike was blatently cloned. The guy only had the right hand side of the V5 (not a major issue on it's own).
The frame number was stamped onto a metal plate, then riveted over the original. Oh and the engine number didn't match the HPI.

When I pointed this out the guy quickly decided he didnt want to sell it and pushed it back inside.

With regards to the 200, I've read that they can be quite twitchy with the power delivery, and the powerband can suddenly hit.

Wouldn't that make it a bad idea for a novice off road rider?

I have a 200 and have done a few mods as it was horrible for trail riding at first.
Change the sprockets to 14 and 44
Adjust the power valve right to the top of the adjustment mine rarely comes in now unless I really open it up.
I have fitted a 12 oz flywheel weight.
These have made a huge difference.

Having tried a DRZ-S this year, i sold it as it was too heavy for a 400 and not as good as a XR400 on the trails - so sold it for another XR400R

Recently pick up a KTM400 RFS and that is a peach, for a 400

Still keeping the XR though

DRZ - 133kg
CRF250L - 144kg

I don't think its that heavy for a 400 trail bike myself. The good thing about the DRZ is its great on the road. If you are just using it to ride up byways its fine for that. Good ones seem to fetch £££'s these days
