Hi All,

I have been asked by my partner's father if I could use "the internet" to find out if a 400 x 18 rear tyre would fit a Beta Alp 200.

He is in his 80's and still rides ! I hope you don't mind me asking on his behalf.

Next time I see him I will set this site up on their tablet, I know he will enjoy the conversations you are having.

Thanks,

Barry for Dave Stone. ( Waterlooville area )

I owned an Alp 200 for a couple of years, when I bought it it came with a rear Pirelli MT43 4.00 x 18 trials tyre so I'd say the answer's Yes :)

The 4.00 can be misleading as different tyre manufacturers seem to use the same measurement for slightly different tyres.
Some have bigger knobbles which can either push against a spring protector or even rub the sides of the swinging arm if it narrows - I have found that out the hard way and had to extend my chain to push the wheel back.

Phone Trellesport - good tyres and a really helpful company - they import Mitas.
Tell them the type of rider and the terrain as well and they will give good advice.

I think you'll be fine with a Pirelli MT43 Trials

Depends if it's a trials tyre or not, perhaps.

My understanding is that trials tyre size and tread pattern is governed by FIM regulation, so they should be the same size irrespective of make.

Trail and enduro tyre sizes are a bit more nominal.

A 4.00: 18 trials tyre will fit...but you'd have to actually measure a trail/enduro one to make sure.

Sometimes you can fit a wider tyre if you use a longer chain...but this will also impact on steering geometry and suspension rates as the wheel sits further back in the swinging arm.

Hi

I have spoken to Dave this afternoon and passed on your thoughts and advice.

First I must thank you -

GDAS24, davidscott, johnnyboxer and Richard Simpson.

It was good of you to spend your time replying and is very much appreciated by us, especially Dave.

He feels from the feedback that the 4.00 x 18 is worth a try.

He also fully understands the possible complications but is a very experienced engineer and has been riding for a long time.

We are going down to visit for a few days on Wednesday ( he is out riding ! )

So we'll have a look on Thursday and I'll let you know.

Thanks again,

Barry and Dave.
