Driving between Norwich and Ipswich seen a few byway signs (normal road signs). Are they what the sign says? Is this the way forward?

If they're in Norfolk then you'll probably be disapointed.

In some areas Norfolk CC appear to use white road signs saying "byway" to indicate minor unclassified roads. A few are unsurfaced (what they call soft roads and what we'd UUCRs) but most of the ones with signs are tarmac.

The good news is that Norfolk do have lots of unsealed UCRs but they're not generally signed.

In Suffolk, byway does tend to mean byway open to all traffic but their signs are small green finger post type.

Cheers

Richard

I have started to do a lot of riding about lately and cannot understand why Suffolk council have so much better signs than Norfolk. Come on Norfolk CC follow Suffolks lead and give us a clue!!

Blimey! Not many people I know would suggest that any authority follow Suffolk CCs lead on anything (especially TROs) but to be fair I know what you mean.

Generally signage is one thing Suffolk do well but there are reasons for the difference between these two counties. Highway authorities actually have a legal duty to sign public rights of way but not UCRs.

Most of Suffolks legal lanes are byways so they're signed. Most of Norfolks are UCRs so they're not.

It isn't that authorities can't sign UCRs it's just that they're not legally required to do so and most don't bother.

Cheers

Richard
