First thing is don't be influenced by brand name or looks.

Get boot that fit. Try before you buy, avoid mail order and internet.

You can split the boots availalbe into two separate styles.

Trials boots

Sacrifice protection for flexibility to give better braking control etc.
Always have a treaded/cleated sole.

MX Boots
Sacrifice flexibility for protection.
Usually have an external steel toe-tip.
Most will have a so-called slipper sole: don't buy these.
Some will have a treaded sole, which gives you grip for those critical opening the gate half way.
up a steep hill while trying to balance your bike with one hand situations.

In my opinion/experience the so-called Trail Rider or Adventure boots are rubbish for trail riding in the UK.

If you are on a budget, look at the Hein Gerike TRG Cross boots. These are rebranded Oxtar/TCX MX boots and cost less than £135.

NB don't pay extra for a boot that claims to be waterproof: it won't be (water gets in the top). If you are worried about your feet getting wet, use Sealskinz socks.

yeah i got waterproof socks as i do a lot of off road mtbing, i'm new to the sport so i'd say protection is paramount. Do you need to get "the next size up" to make way for thick socks? or is that why you say try before you buy?

Tech 3's will do everything you need and last better than forma/octar.

+1 on tech 3 from me too very comfy and feet/ankle feel safe
but I too would suggest trying on lots of different ones before buying I found the more expensive alp stars less comfortable :?
I didnt find Hein Gerikes comfy at all
Try before you buy its really the only way to find out :D
