Methinks you are riding the wrong roads.

C:) It wears tyres a LOT

Aye that's another thing I have noticed with the 250. the tyres aren't getting shredded on the road and when I ride places like Salisbury plain where you can open it up the 450 span up everywhere (predictably and with drive so it wasn't a problem it just wrecked tyres) whereas the 250 stays much more composed and the tyres last longer for it.

Before you ask why I didn't get a 250 it's because this is my only bike and I need versatility - 690 does my commuting, camping, shopping, touring, and has a set of smoto wheels for tarmac giggles.

Aye, one bike to do everything is always a compromise. Sounds like it's a good one tho. :)

Absolutely but those are the ones we have and where I live requires a bit of a ride to get to the lanes - and no, I am not moving house!!

I hope to retire in about 5 years (at 60) and we certainly don't plan to stay in the south east - it's no fun riding or driving on the roads round here now.

Thank you all very much for all the info and feedback on this.
Think you've swayed me to the 250f, although i do travel 40 - 50 miles on the black stuff to some lanes. But like AdamA and jonpaul1st say, i think the 450 will eat the rubber!
Hows the 250 on maintenance? (oil chages, valve clearances, etc..)

Thanks again guys :)

i sold my 450wrf to much power for lanes and bought a new 250 wrf i drop oil and filter every 500 miles i dont bother to much wi valve checking you would know they were out if the bike becomes hard to start, very little goes wrong with these bikes just wash oil it put in some fuel and job done go and have fun ,my wife rides wr250f as well and between two bikes they cost very little to maintain. :)

I've had both and still use the 250. As said before the 450 is going to be easier and less frantic on the road but on the trail esp rocky or twisty stuff the 250 will leave the 450 for dead.

The 450 is a beast and you just don't need that power on most trails. Ooooh the times it got me into more trouble than it got me out of :)

On the maintenance side. It's 3 yrs old now. Oil changed every other ride..about 200 miles and a filter every second oil change. It doesn't eat chains, one set of fork seals, two sets of brake pads.

Go for a decent ally bash plate, open up exhaust, air box, re-jet and disconnect grey wire.

I've had the 450 in the past and to be fair it's a better bike ad a supermoto. The 250 is probaly the best greenlaner out there and has a big following. The 250 is still quicker than most 400's if you can get an alley framed one they are the best ones.

I ve got a 2007 Wr450f ally frame love the bike to bits, but rode the same year 250 and think it is equally as good. I like the battle with the 450 though!

 Yeah i hear they are pretty powerful. The 2007 model was the one i wanted, but ive since set myself a budget of £3000 for the bike + insurance and i dont think ill get one for that, so im thinking i might get an older KTM 450EXC (might supermoto it at some stage). Also the insurance is cheaper for some reason.

Still love the yammys though. :D
