Hi

Fit tyre mousses instead of tubes and forget about punctures all together. Much easier than the hassle of carrying all the tyre changing stuff and having to wrestle with a muddy tyre in the rain. Regretably I did it for years before using mousses and wont ever go back to tubes.

Hope this helps

regards

Hi All,
Equally important is the rider,
I carry a basic first aid kit and some strong pain killers.
Also a can of red bull and a mars bar for those "sugar rush" moments helps out when my concentration starts to lag.

I always carry emergency flares for those air ambulance moments (or when I'm invited to '70s discos  ) as well as a neck brace. I also try to ride with some one who carries lots of spanners, keeps up with basic maintainence of his/her own bike and doesn't fall off and break things.

yeaah it's always good to have a marine engineer along for those 'submarine' moments eh Steve!

It's good to have those tyre valve caps that have the slot in the top for removing the inner part - a tool that is part of your bike.

Also not strictly a tool but some have a old car fan belt round the forks at the front - helps when the bike needs pulling.

Hi all, I'm just getting some essential repair kit together as a newbie and wondered if anyone could suggest a tyre inflator, I've seen a CO2 type but do I need a special tube or valve for one of these? I've also seen these repair/sealer/inflator canisters? would this make it ok to go out without a spare tube?

Would love to hear some advice on the matter

Cheers

Dunk

Hi Duncan - I've tried those little CO2 things once and wasn't impressed - maybe the way I was using it but it just made my hand very cold and barely inflated the tube, I also had a foam 'get you home' canister with me for a while but just ended up chucking it away when it got badly corroded.

I dare say many have had better results with all of this stuff but I reckon a spare 21" inner tube, puncture repair kit, tyre levers and pump are the most 'idiot-proof' for me.

You can get a small bike pump into a tool bag, and after all you can probably find a garage near by to blow up the tyre properly if you are trail riding.

I reckon it would take a few of those CO2 cannisters to seat a tyre properly!

Some people recommend putting 'slime' or similar into the inner tube to stop a tyre going flat after a puncture - I'm just too tight to pay for something that will only last as long as an inner tube and would rather put up with the very occaisional trail side repair job.

only my tuppence worth and I'm definitely not mr.fixit!
