I have been toying with the idea of buying a GPS. But what I want to know is. Do they show byways up? IE. do they show where you are on the OS map? and can you view a full OS map with tracks etc? oh and whats the best one which is cheap?
Well... from my experience, the best option is never the cheapest. I purchased the Road Angel Adventurer & wan't impressed with it for a number of reasons. Screen clarity being 1 of them. So when it bounced off the mount riding away from Box Hill... I swore & after deciding not to risk life & limb looking for a broken unit, I started researching alternative SatNav's. I bought the SatMap Active 10. After returning the unit to the manufacturers (3x) I had the unit replaced. Now I am very happy with it. Because I had the Memory map software with the Road Angel, I now plot the byways onto the Memory May software on the computer & transfer it onto the Active 10 in GPX format, which IMO is the best solution. I know it is a very expensive way to come to the conclusion but thought I'd offer my thoughts.
SatMap has a route share & Route planning feature which allows you to up-load/down-load routes & share them. You select your "adventure type" & green lanes are categorised under 4 x 4. People rate the routes for accuracy etc which gives an indications of the "value" of the route. I have tried using Trailwise which I find only borders on being of assistance to the Green Laning passtime IMO. I think if the TRF was to press the councils of the UK to use Satmap as the definitive register for BOAT's as a standard because of it's logical intuitive software, then it would enhance the access to green lane users. I love riding green lanes but it seems you need a LOT of patience to understand & learn the legal lanes. I have discussed it with a few members of my TRF group & they agree. Thoughts?
