Your battery is possibly not charging?

sonds like something in your charging system. Have you got a multimeter?

The lights are probably running off the lighting coil which is defective. You could try powering them direct from your battery but need to check it is still putting enough charge in when running. Check you have above 12 volts at the battery. If not i would get a new lighting coil.

They will only get so bright then. At a higher RPM the regulator will do what its supposed to and protect the fuses/bulbs hence the lights dimming down. My old steel framed Yamaha WR did the same thing.

Didn't notice it when riding really only if it was stationary and I reved it. I suppose when riding the flywheel is moving which generates more energy

My guess is, as said before, that the battery isn't charging. This could be becuase of a faulty charging system or the battery is old and not taking in any more charge (I had this).

I think the reason that it is getting dimmer in the higher rpm's is because, as you rev higher, the ignition coil is going to need for voltage as the plug will be sparking more. This will draw more current from the battery/charging system and cause there to be less current going to the lighting loom because there is a lower overall voltage on the bike because of the battery/charging system problem.

Check to see that the voltage of the battery is right with a multimeter (they are pretty cheap if you don't have one) and there are also lots of tutorials on the internet on how to check to see if the charging system is working. I think you check the resistance between the wires coming out by the flywheel.

Hope this helps.

John
