+1 for the 13 tooth sprocket. Makes a big difference to slow speed work but still usable on the road, without being too revvy,if you need to ride the bike to the trails.
Bar risers definitely help as well.

What wraparound handguards would you recommend that are going to be able to take a few knocks ?

If it's not been done already then throw away the standard tyres. They seem ok on dry summer trails but you will be demoralised if you use them on anything vaguely muddy.
