Anyone out there running a Beta Alp 200 on knobblies? I’ve just bought one and it came with trials tyres. Would like to fit knobblies but want to makes sure they will fit before I buy. Cheers.

The Alp 200 is a complete mountain goat of a bike and its natural habitat is either trail riding or LDT's and will get up anything on trials tyres - however if they are a soft compound and you are riding tarmac at more than 40MPH between lanes they will wear out quite quickly.

To get correct size,if you do decide knobblies are best, just order the same size and width as you have as trials tyres.

A 4.00-18 street-legal enduro tyre will be wider knob-to-knob than a 4.00-18 trials tyre.

Running a longer chain can help in marginal cases: gets the tread of the tyre into a wider part of the swinging arm.

Yes, I was thinking clearance might be an issue and wondered if anyone had done it rather than risk getting some that are the same size but actually externally bigger and finding that they foul the swing arm or front mudguard

If it's any help, I can measure the tread width on a couple of street-legal enduro rear tyres I've got: one is a Pirelli MT21 140/80-18, which would probably be too much tyre for your bike. It was original equipment on the CCM 404 DS.

The other is a Vee Rubber Enduro 120/90 - 18. This is an excellent tyre for lighter and less powerful bikes (original equipment on the Gas Gas Pampera 250). Very easy to fit...and actually won an enduro tyre shootout against much more expensive tyres in Trail Bike Magazine.

I think they are quite cheap too.

Note that both these tyres are proper enduro tyres. Not road tyres with 'enduro' written on the sidewall.

Rode yesterday with a friend on a Beta Alp 200. He has Maxxis IT64 tyres fitted. 80/100 X 21 front and 100/100 X 18 rear. You would not go bigger on the rear without clearance problems. The tyres work fine for him. In Herts lots of us use the Maxxis. Good balance between grip and durability.

Cheers Vern, that’s exactly what I was looking for. Do you know if he had to adjust the gearing? I think the rear might be slightly bigger on the circumference than the trials tyre.

That is correct. The Maxxis IT M7305 come in 110/100-18 or 120/100-18.

They are both road legal MX tyres. Note that because they are MX, they are measured differently to FIM enduro.

MX 110 = FIM 120
MX 120 = FIM 140

Wingle37 I believe you have found the tyre now. 100/100 -18 4 ply Maxxis M7305 Maxxcross IT (59M) (E-Marked) is available.
I will find out about the gearing but I don't think it's been altered from standard.
