The 400 is better than the other KTMs but I do an oil and filter change every 500 miles-ish and then just the normal checks.
Filters are dirt cheap and it doesn't take much oil so not exactly crippling.

Ok, it's not every 1200 to 2000 miles, say, but it does mean you keep a good close eye on the bikes condition while you do it.

What about things like valve clearances and such? I had a wr 450 but that seemed abit of a pain with maintenance.

A oil and filter every 500 miles or so and general stuff I can cope with.

I'd rather have slightly more bike than I need than want to change it in 6 months time. I've had fireblades etc on road and I know it's completely different off road but used to abit of power if that makes sense?

Thanks for help so far very informative

Matt

If you want a great trailbike - just get a Honda XR400R and start kickstarting it

Out of favour, due to no electric start in the current climate, but nowt wrong with them

Is the xr a import? If so do you struggle for parts?

400 or 450 exc (RFS Engine) which means the valves don't require shims, just normal 'tappet' adjustments.... If I was going 'smoker' I would get a 300 rather than the 250, more bottom end power, more chuggable.... But as said if you are doing loads of road work, DRZ.... Just get what you fancy, they all hold their value ... I think DRZ's have even gone up !....

KTM 400 is about every 15 hour for an oil change.
Valve clearances on the later overhead cam models are not difficult, first time I did mine it took about 2 hours and that included changing a couple of shims, main annoyance is having to remove the tank, and one of the cam cover bolts is difficult to undo.

How often are you doing valve clearances or tappet adjustments?

Are they dual start?

Cheers

No, speedo in Km's
But a uk model sold by Honda
Speedo no problem for mot

Parts are all available from Honda or aftermarket still

Full lights - even number plate light

Good on road to 70

Probably the best trail bike ever made (and I have had a KTM 400 exc RFS - that was way more maintenance intensive)

Oil changes on XR 400 are 1000 miles or more miles

Valves similar - screw & locknut & take about 20-30 mins tops & don't even need to take tank off

XR is Aircooled so no rads to smash or boil over

Lighter than a DRZ too

KTM 400 valve checks are supposed to be every 15 hours.
Mine went 70 hours between checks and they were all still in tolerance, but 2 were right at the bottom of tolerance so I changed them, other two were in the middle.

I wouldn't buy a trail bike without an electric start.
Try kicking when you've got your left foot in a rut, on a steep hill, when you've stalled or if you're less than about 5'10 tall.
It's not worth the hassle IMHO.
