Hello all.

Today I did a oil and filter change on my 2004 drz400e.

The first thing that made me look up and think ...hang on.

I warmed the bike up to help drain the oil....i turned it off and un did the filler cap on the frame.

There was pressure behind it and as I removed the cap there was a gurgling noise like water bubbling. I then drained the oil from the sump and the drain point at bottom of frame.

The oil was very think...almost like water.

I suspected water was mixing with the oil but the oil was not separating was not white and foamy.....looked like used oil....just very thin.

The bike has never lost water....ive checked the coolant and it seems fine so signs of oil.

I'm stumped.

The bike runs fine doesn't smoked or anything odd.

I'm doing a trf fun day tomorrow....i put a new oil filter in and refilled with 1.8l of oil. I will drop it again Monday and see what the oil is like.

Any ideas or advice appreciated.

Dan

How much oil came out?

Was it diluted with petrol (which would mix with the oil but make it thinner and smell more like petrol)?

Don't see what the problem is here. Sounds normal to me...

Used oil will run out thinner..when its hot.

Anyway

Check your fuel tap is shutting the flow of fuel off. It could be flooding the carb, cylinder and allowing fuel in oil. is a possibility.

Dan,

Did you remember to clean the oil strainer as well as draining the old oil?

When you do drain your oil always use your full senses of touch, smell and sight as they will help you understand what may be going on inside the engine;

Touch, does it feel clear of bits of debris; how slippy does it feel; is the air filter clean and sealed
Smell, does it smell of petrol -symptom of leaking fuel tap or carburettor; does it smell of burnt cork - symptom of clutch slip
Sight, is it a clear brown used oil colour or might there be white frothy emulsification symptom of water ingress/engine running too cool/breather blockage/head gasket failure; are there specks of silver or bronze indicating a potential bearing failure; measure the amount that comes out to compare with what you originally put in

Plus is it the correct oil for that particular marque and model.

Do you know the history of the bike? Hope these comments help.

TTFN

Hugh.

thank you for all the replies.

I think I panicked with the thinness of the oil because of the pressure build up and the gurgling noise...jumped the gun and assumed the worst.

I'm 99% sure there is a problem with the breather that goes to the oil catch tank and then back to the head.

I'm thinking the breather from rocker cover takes the pressure from crankcase into oil catch tank where the pressure is released to atmosphere. And then the caught oil returns to the crankcase via the bottom hose?

I'm having a guess that the catch tank breather is blocked and unable to release the pressure so it just builds up.

again thank you for the replies

Dan
