I'm not even sure about road bikes, to be honest.
Pedestrians are deaf and blind to bikes and most motorists don't see you even with twin lights on and they certainly won't hear you inside a car with the radio on.

And they annoy the hell out of residents when you can hear them for two miles when they go past your house/village.

Having said that, hybrid cars are lethal in towns as you can't hear them at all.

I'm a believer in loud cans save lives.....its saved mine once or twice. (plus theres a big kid hiding in me)

Don't forget my note about my Triumph earlier - I'm not that holy!!

Road bike & competition bikes, absolutely. Trail/green lane bikes, forget it, more trouble than they are worth.

My wr250f came with an FMF powercore. It was disgustingly loud, the packing was fubared and so was the jetting.

I replaced it with a standard can and everything is super now :)

Aftermarket cans do not have to be loud, but there are advantages, take them to the extreme and it can be about performance enhancement, not necessary for trail riding.

Some may fit them because very often they look cosmetically better than the oem.

Some may fit them because they are a lot lighter than oem.

I think it's wrong to suggest that it's all about noise and by doing so you're in danger of stereotyping some trail riders.

For me it's about looks and weight, that's why I bought a 350exc six days, if I wanted heavy and fugly I would have bought a drz.

I'll get my coat.

I agree with standard cans for trail riding and loud one for the road bike.

Keeping a low profile seems to help when green laning.

Maybe a quiet can on the road bike is also a good idea, broadcasting you are using the available power may draw unwanted attention also. ;)

With my devils advocate hat on......

Imagine that occasion where you are out for a walk with the family in the depths of the countryside.
All you can hear is one prat with a loud can on a lane maybe half a mile away as he rides along an empty byway.
He may not be riding fast but that noise will sound across the country and annoy everyone in earshot.
The same applies on the road. You can hear some modern bikes with loud exhausts for a few miles on a quiet day.

I see no reason for a loud exhaust and think the lifesaver theory on the road is generally a fallacy.
However, I did nearly get run over in Rome by a Prius taxi

I had a scorpion on my fazer road bike. Came with it when I bought it...Sold it and put the standard can back on. It ran so much better...I mean if you have a 1000cc road bike changing the can is just going to make more noise....Its going to do nothing else they are already like 141hp....
