its like a pair of tights, either coming up to just above the knee, or full leggings, but something that will stop the backs of my knees from chaffing so much on a ride out, with knee pads on?

can anyone tell me what they are actually called, or someone that sells them?

Personally never got on with anything like that as I found they slipped.
I always where the klim base layer and Vaseline my knees up first to stop the chaffing and rubbing.

cheep alternative, tubular bandage cut it too long and roll top over knee guard to stop it slipping down

Or just use cheap running 'skins'... Base layer things...I use fox downhill knee pads, they have no sharp edges and are very comfortable without anything underneath ( fully covered in material) but they are £50 !... Good though.

I wear Lycra

I'll expand on that!
Cycling trousers, with hoop to keep them under the foot.
Then cycling knee pads.
No chafe or itch.
Thin enough to wear under MX pants.
In winter, I just wear them under the overproof-water-trousers.

For long long runs on uncomfortable bikes, cycling trousers with gel pad eases the pain a little.

I have tried most things but a pair of hold ups and silk panties can be quite nice but don't fall off and end up in A&E ! :o
